Description
The first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to America departed Stavanger, Norway, July 4, 1825 on a sloop-rigged ship named Restauration. The ship was only 54’ long and departed with 52 persons aboard. After a voyage across the Atlantic that lasted 98 days, 53 persons (yes, there was a child born aboard during the voyage) arrived safely in New York Harbor on October 9th, 1825.
Today these courageous Norwegian’s are remembered as The Sloopers and their ship, Restauration is referred to as The Norwegian Mayflower. And in great part due to their courage in 1825, nearly 800,000 Norwegians would follow in their footsteps for a new life in America in the ensuing 100 years. These Norwegian immigrants worked hard to establish themselves and their future in America, thus contributing to the strong ties that exist between Norway and America even to this day.
This specially-commissioned reproduction of the 1961 original 668-page book, with many maps and pictures, tells the story of their journey, the families involved, and genealogies of the descendants. Divided in two volumes, with volume 1 describing “The Years Together (1825-1850” and volume 2 detailing “Their Ancestry and Posterity (1850-1961)”.
